First Nations Prayers

Web of Life

Teach your children what we have taught our children – that the Earth is our Mother. Whatever befalls the Earth befalls the sons and daughters of the Earth. If men spit upon the ground, they spit upon themselves. This we know. The Earth does not belong to us, we belong to the Earth. This we know. All things are connected like the blood that unites one family. All things are connected. Whatever befalls the Earth befalls the sons and daughters of the Earth. We did not weave the web of life; We are merely a strand in it. Whatever we do to the Web, We do to ourselves.

Hey-a-a-hey! Hey-a-a-hey! Hey-a-a-hey! Hey-a-a-hey!

Grandfather, Great Mysterious One,
You have been always and before You nothing has been.
There is nothing to pray to but You.
The star nations all over the universe are Yours,
And Yours are the grasses of the earth.
Day in and day out You are the life of things.
You are older than all need,
Older than all pain and prayer.
Grandfather, all over the world the faces of the living ones are alike.
In tenderness they have come up out of the ground.
Look upon Your children with children in their arms,
That they may face the winds,
And walk the good road to the day of quiet.
Teach me to walk the soft earth,
A relative to all that live.
Sweeten my heart and fill me with light,
And give me the strength to understand and the eyes to see.
Help me, for without You I am nothing.

Hetchetu aloh!

Remember as we go
that one God
kind and wise
created all.

IROQUOIS PRAYER

Oh Great Spirit, whose voice I hear in the winds
and whose breath gives life to all the world,
hear me.
I am a (human) before you, one of your many children.
I am small and weak. I need your strength and wisdom.
Let me walk in beauty and make my eyes ever behold the red and purple sunsets.
Make my hands respect the things you have made, my ears sharp to hear your voice.
Make me wise so that I may know the things you have taught my people, the lessons you have hidden in every leaf and rock. I seek strength, Oh Creator, not to be superior to my brothers (/others), but to be able to fight my greatest enemy, myself.
Make me ever ready to come to you with clean hands and straight eye, so that when life fades, at the setting sunset,
my spirit may come to you without shame.

… White Cloud

First Nation Prayer

I give you this one thought to keep— I am with you still – I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow; I am the diamond glints on snow;
I am the sunlight on ripened grain, I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning rush I am the swift, uplifting rush
Of quite birds in circled flight. I am the soft stars that shine at night
Do not think of me as gone – I am with you still – in each new dawn.

Pueblo Indian Prayer

Hold on to what is good,
even if it’s a handful of earth.
Hold on to what you believe,
even if it’s a tree that stands by itself.
Hold on to what you must do,
even if it’s a long way from here.
Hold on to your life,
even if it’s easier to let go.
Hold on to my hand,
even if I’ve gone away from you.

NATIVE BLESSING

MAY YOU HAVE THE STRENGTH
OF EAGLES’ WINGS,
THE FAITH AND COURAGE TO
FLY TO NEW HEIGHTS,
AND THE WISDOM
OF THE UNIVERSE
TO CARRY YOU THERE

We pray for change, we hope for a change, but we wait impatiently. Is
the great spirit not hearing us? We asked. Where is the answer?

If our prayers were suddenly answered, would be we ready? Or would we
look behind us for the familiar things, the people, the habits, the
routine?

If we were instantly healed, instantly prospered, instantly sought
after and loved, then what would we do? Attention, compassion and
self-pity are sometimes more important than having everything changed
for the better.

The fear of being without something to keep us working
with the same burden, dealing with familiar pain, can stop us from
knowing what it is to be free and well.

If we can envision life without a particular problem we can turn our
minds to real change and have it happen. If we can see change, receive
it, and know the joy, then gratitude and thanksgiving sets it in
place.

An Indian Prayer

My grandfather is the fire My grandmother is the wind
The Earth is my mother The Great Spirit is my father
The World stopped at my birth and laid itself at my feet
And I shall swallow the Earth whole
when I die and the Earth and I will be one

Hail The Great Spirit, my father without him no one could exist because there would be no will to live. Hail The Earth, my mother without which no food could be grown and so cause the will to live to starve. Hail the wind, my grandmother for she brings loving, lifegiving rain nourishing us as she nourishes our crops. Hail the fire, my grandfather for the light, the warmth, the comfort he brings without which we be animals, not men. Hail my parent and grandparents without which not I, nor you, nor anyone else could have existed

Life gives life which gives unto itself a promise of new life.

Hail the Great Spirit, The Earth, the wind, the fire praise my parents loudly for they are your parents, too. Oh, Great Spirit, giver of my life please accept this humble offering of prayer this offering of praise this honest reverence of my love for you.

For All People

It is true that many of the old ways have been lost. But just as the rains restore the earth after a drought, so the power of the Great Mystery will restore the way and give it new life. We ask that this happen not just for the Red People, but for all people, that they all might live. In ignorance and carelessness they have walked on Ina Maka, Our Mother. They did not understand that they are part of all beings, the Four-legged, the Winged, Grandfather Rock, the Tree People, and our Star Brothers. Now our Mother and all our Relations are crying out. They cry for the help of all people.

Laws of The Great Spirit

Treat the Earth and all that dwell thereon with respect. Remain close to the Great Spirit. Show great respect for your fellow beings. Work together for the benefit of all Mankind. Give assistance and kindness wherever needed.

Do what you know to be right. Look after the well being of mind and body. Dedicate a share of your efforts to the greater good. Be truthful and honest at all times. Take full responsibility for your actions.

Great Spirit, give us hearts to understand; never to take from creation’s beauty more than we give; never to destroy wantonly for the furtherance of greed; never to deny to give our hands for the building of earth’s beauty; never to take from her what we cannot use.

Give us hearts to understand that to destroy earth’s music is to create confusion; that to wreck her appearance is to blind us to beauty; that to callously pollute her fragrance is to make a house of stench; that as we care for her she will care for us.

We have forgotten who we are.
We have sought only our own security.
We have exploited simply for our own ends.
We have distorted our knowledge.
We have abused our power.

Great Spirit, whose dry lands thirst, help us to find the way to refresh your lands.
Great Spirit, whose waters are choked with debris and pollution, help us to find the way to cleanse your waters.
Great Spirit, whose beautiful earth grows ugly with misuse, help us to find the way to restore beauty to your handiwork.
Great Spirit, whose creatures are being destroyed, help us to find a way to replenish them.
Great Spirit, whose gifts to us are being lost in selfishness and corruption, help us to find the way to restore our humanity.

Great Spirit

Great Spirit gave me special wings, calling me to soar above, He adorned my heart and gave me earth
so I can simply love.
Great Spirit gave me friends and family, calling to my heart, He showered my life and showed me love,
so I will never part.
Great Spirit gave me compassion and patience, calling me to be, He covered my eyes with lovingkindness,
so I can always see.

Great Spirit gave me special wings, calling me to soar above, Earth is such a special place that I dearly loved.
Great Spirit says my time is done, soul calling to his light, Do not fret and cry those tears, I am with you all the time.
I will always love you, my earthly being gone, I live within the hearts of all my loved ones.

Great Spirit gave me special wings, calling me to soar above, My transformed body now complete,
I fly on the wings of love.

Grandfather, Great Spirit

Grandfather, Great Spirit, you have been always, and before you no one has been. There is no other one to pray to but you. You yourself, everything that you see, everything has been made by you. The star nations all over the universe you have finished. The four quarters of the earth you have finished. The day, and in that day, everything you have finished.

Grandfather, Great Spirit, lean close to the earth that you may hear the voice I send.

You towards where the sun goes down, behold me: Thunder Beings, behold me! You where the White Giant lives in power, behold me! You where the sun shines continually, whence come the day-break star and the day, behold me! You where the summer lives, behold me! You in the depths of the heavens, an eagle of power, behold! And you, Mother Earth, the only Mother, you who have shown mercy to your children!

Hear me, four quarters of the world – a relative I am! Give me strength to walk the soft earth, a relative to all that is! Give me the eyes to see and the strength to understand, that I may be like you. With your power only can I face the winds.

Great Spirit, Great Spirit, my Grandfather, all over the earth the faces of living things are all alike. With tenderness have these have come up out of the ground. Look upon these faces of children without number and with children in their arms, that they may face the winds and walk the good road to the day of quiet.

This is my prayer: hear me! The voice I have sent is weak, yet with earnestness I have sent it, Hear me!

It is finished. Hetchetu aloh!

Teach Me

Earth teach me stillness as the grasses are stilled with light.
Earth teach me suffering as old stones suffer with memory.
Earth teach me humility as blossoms are humble with beginning.
Earth teach me caring as the mother who secures her young.
Earth teach me courage as the tree which stands alone.
Earth teach me limitation as the ant which crawls on the ground.
Earth teach me freedom as the eagle which soars in the sky.
Earth teach me resignation as the leaves which die in the fall.
Earth teach me regeneration as the seed which rises in the spring.
Earth teach me to forget myself as melted snow forgets its life.
Earth teach me to remember kindness as dry fields weep with rain.

The Promise of Tomorrow

The promise Creator gives us Comes with every new day,
The gift of breath, the gift of life, Opportunities in a vast array.
How do we count our blessings, Through the choices life can bring?
Is it through joyful lessons? Or the fears to which we cling?
Are we learning to show gratitude, For the victories over human pain?
By honoring the feeling choices, We grasp the will we’ve regained.
Can we change our focus, With no need to defend?
Acknowledging joy and sorrow, Without judging foe or friend?
Tomorrow promises the fullness Of every human way to know:
How we master each challenge Determines our balance – reflecting how we grow.

Look to The Earth

Look to the Earth And to the Skies The Sun, the Moon, and to the Stars You who would be wise.
For they contain the full measure of man The height, the breadth, the depth, the span
Of his entirety.

Look to the Earth And to the Skies And watch them turn Like pages of a holy book
But one untouched by human hand You who would be wise.

Look to the Earth And to the Skies For in that which can be seen Without Can true knowledge come
Of unseen mysteries that lie Within To you who would be wise.

Look to the Earth And to the Skies In Spring and Summer, Winter and in the Fall.
Watch life begin, unfold, then fade and die To rise anew Time and again for Time Untold
You who would be wise.

Look to the Earth And to the Skies And in your looking, learn this mystery:
That you who look to the Earth And to the Skies
Shall be given eyes to see Shall be given eyes
To make you wise Eternally.

Earth Prayer

Grandfather, Great Spirit, once more behold me on earth and lean to hear my feeble voice. You lived first, and you are older than all need, older than all prayer. All things belong to you — the two-legged, the four-legged, the wings of the air, and all green things that live. You have set the powers of the four quarters of the earth to cross each other. You have made me cross the good road and road of difficulties, and where they cross, the place is holy. Day in, day out, forevermore, you are the life of things. Hey! Lean to hear my feeble voice.

At the center of the sacred hoop you have said that I should make the tree to bloom. With tears running, O Great Spirit, my Grandfather, with running eyes I must say the tree has never bloomed. Here I stand, and the tree is withered. Again, I recall the great vision you gave me. It may be that some little root of the sacred tree still lives. Nourish it then that it may leaf and bloom and fill with singing birds! Hear me, that the people may once again find the good road and the shielding tree.

Earth Healing Ceremony

O Great Creator, I come before you in a humble manner and offer you this sacred pipe. With tears in my eyes and an ancient song from my heart I pray. To the four powers of Creation, To the Grandfather Sun, To the Grandmother Moon, To the Mother Earth, And to my ancestors. I pray for my relations in Nature, All those who walk, crawl, fly, and swim, Seen and unseen, To the good spirits that exist in every part of Creation. I ask that you bless our elders and children, families, and friends, and the brothers and sisters who are in prison. I pray for the ones who are sick on drugs and alcohol and for those who are now homeless and forlorn. I also pray for peace among the four races of humankind.

May there be good health and healing for this Earth,
May there be Beauty above me, May there be Beauty below me,
May there be Beauty in me, May there be Beauty all around me.
I ask that this world be filled with Peace, Love, and Beauty.

Mother Earth Prayer

Mother Earth hear your child, As I sit here on your lap of grass, I listen to the echoes of your voice In my brother, the Wind, As he blows from all corners and directions. The soft and gentle raindrops are the Tears you cry for your children Teach me the Lessons you offer: To nurture my children, as you nurture yours, To learn the Lessons of the Four Kingdoms, that make up this World of Physical Things, and To Learn to Walk the Path chosen so long ago. Mother Earth, hear your child, Be a bond between the Worlds of Earth and Spirit. Let the Winds echo the Knowledge of the Grandfathers. Who await, unseen, yet visible if I only turn my eyes to their World. Let me hear their Voices, in the Winds that Blow to the East.

From the East: I seek the Lessons of Childhood: To see with the trusting innocence of a small one, The Lessons of Spirit, Given in Love by our Creator.

From the South: to Learn the Ways of Questioning: The Fire and Independence of adolescence, The Truths, and how they help us Grow along this Path.

From the West: where the Grandfathers teach us Acceptance of Responsibility That come during the years of Marriage and Family. That my own children grow Strong, and True.

From the North: where the Elders, who by their long lives Have learned and stored Wisdom and Knowledge. And Learned to Walk in Balance and Harmony with our Mother, the Earth.

Mother Earth, hear your child. Hold my hand as I Walk my Path in this World. Guide me to the Lessons I seek, bring me closer to Our Creator, Until I return to the Western Direction, to once again Enter the World of Spirit, Where the Sacred Fire Awaits, and I rejoin the Council of the Elders, In the Presence of the One Who-Created-All.

I Am There

I am the breeze that kisses your cheek. I am the sun that warms your face. When you look at the purple evening sky, it is me. When you see a majestic mountain, it is me.

When the birds sweetly sing, it is my voice. When the water gently laps against the shore, it is my heartbeat.

I am the green grass against your feet. I am the refreshing shade of summer.

In the stars, you see my eyes. In the blue sky, you see my body.

Feel the air that surrounds you, I am there.

Feel the love in your heart, I am there.

Colors of The Spirit
Journey “Trial by Fire”

We are One We are One

Distant rhythm in a troubled sky Angry clouds divide the sun Feels like thunder and so do I Bloody silence has begun Flying like a wounded dove Tomorrow comes undone Surrender don’t come easily We try to get…over.

Everybody, feels the rain Falling together…together Many colors of the Spirit Many lives below the sun We are colors of the Spirit.
We are many We are One.

Ask the question – What’s goin’ on? Why raging children run Where’s the father’s legacy? Where’s the harvest of the son? Close your eyes and tell me what you see I see the same thing…same thing.

Many colors of the Spirit Many lives below the sun We are colors of the Spirit Many lives below the sun.

We are many We are One
